Why Upwork Is A Waking Nightmare

Listen you should be happy to work for sub, sub, sub minimum wage.

I check a lot of freelance sites always hoping to drum up so new work, hopefully some long term clients. Really anything that can bring in some extra income. By no means do I consider myself a creative. That part of me feels like it is long in my past and now I just hope to pick up something here and there. That’s when I came across this gem of an offer on Upwork.

Just look at this garbage. This is 7 days a week work, everyday. Every single day. Plus research. A good writer will probably fire off 1800 works in maybe two hours, and that is writing just stream of conscious. This job requires research, then writing. Let’s be conservative and say your research only takes two hours. Then you write the script in two hours. So four hours of work. 4 hours for 30 days. so 120 hours of work a month. For $150. So $1.34 an hour if you knock it all out in four hours. Or If you want to look at it in terms of cents per work and forget hours, you are getting paid .0028 cents per word.

Of course Upwork doesn’t care because either way they are taking a cut. So look at those numbers, then add a cut for Upwork. Oh and they will monetize that YouTube channel as well. So you will get the pleasure of being wildly underpaid while seeing your work drive income for two other entities. I can’t express how much I dislike how sites like this make writers and creatives try to appeal to the lowest possible selling point just for a hope of getting work. As long as there are those of us who need work and take these jobs the bottom feeders will continue to underpay us because sites like Upwork don’t care how little the creative makes as long as they can take their cut too.
